I design for organisations that have to print the thing, hang the thing and live with it for a year.

Most of my work sits between an identity and the objects that carry it: a festival mark and the forty pieces of signage bolted to a pier, a journal grid and the four issues typeset in it. I would rather solve a problem once, in a system somebody else can operate, than hand over a set of files nobody is allowed to touch.

That usually means starting with constraints instead of moodboards — what the printer can hold, what the budget covers, what the volunteer putting up posters at seven in the morning can reasonably manage. The interesting decisions are almost always downstream of those.

I take on four or five projects a year, and I am happy to talk through something that is still a vague idea.
