Field Notes

Field Notes publishes long research pieces about land use, and the writers footnote heavily — often more marginal text than body text on a spread.

Rather than fight that, the grid gives the outer third of every page to the notes and lets the body column narrow when a passage is densely annotated. The measure changes; the baseline never does. Readers reported finding the notes first and the argument second, which turned out to be the right way round.
